We need a World Seagrass Day: petition the UN

Recent work has revealed mangrove and seagrass systems are 40-50 times more efficient at absorbing and locking away carbon than terrestrial forests.  But seagrasses are very sensitive to warm water.  And development continues to impact coastal environments. The Australian coastline has lost 25% of its coastal seagrasses, 50% of tidal marshes and 50-70% of mangroves since European settlement. And the losses continue despite conservation efforts.
