To Tackle Runoff, Cities Turn to Green Initiatives

Urban stormwater runoff is a serious problem, overloading sewage treatment plants and polluting waterways.  Innovative green infrastructure — such as rain gardens and roadside plantings — that mimics the way nature collects and cleanses water are now being used  (Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies, 2013)

When people start really thinking about how a natural approach to the management of water, the cleaning of air, and so forth, can actually reduce costs and increase value at the same time,” says McMahon of the Urban Land Institute, “I just think that it’s inevitable that we’re going to see this as a much more preferred approach going forward”  (Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies, 2013).
